{"id":10,"date":"2012-02-10T08:49:00","date_gmt":"2012-02-10T08:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.maclawran.ca\/100642867"},"modified":"2014-05-31T06:42:16","modified_gmt":"2014-05-31T06:42:16","slug":"100642867","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.maclawran.ca\/?p=10","title":{"rendered":"fear, loathing and coding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coding under the influence is fun.\u00a0 Until it&#8217;s not.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p_embed p_image_embed\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.maclawran.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ce2d9-images-scaled500.jpg\" alt=\"Images\" width=\"189\" height=\"267\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Fear, Loathing<\/strong><strong> and coding<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0120669\/\">Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/a> was great.\u00a0 But Hunter S. Thompson never coded.\u00a0 There were times in the early 80&#8217;s when I&#8217;d summon the junior and say<strong> Go out and get me Vodka!<\/strong> and I would code into the night, and perhaps into the following day (or 2).<\/p>\n<p>The real problem with this was when programming in an altered state, I might not be able to understand why I&#8217;d written something the way I had (certain combinations were notorious for amazing, beautiful, incomprehensible code).<\/p>\n<div class=\"p_embed p_image_embed\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.maclawran.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5c24c-screen_shot_2012-02-10_at_3-54-38_am-scaled500.png\" alt=\"Screen_shot_2012-02-10_at_3\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" \/><\/div>\n<p>I solved the problem by writing the comments before writing the code, like a little story, about what I was going to try to do next&#8230;<strong>WRITE ALL COMMENTS ALWAYS IN CAPITAL LETTERS AND TELL THE STORY OF MY LITTLE FUNCTION.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than once other programmers have commented on the beauty of these comments and how easy it made the code to understand.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t realize that I did it so I&#8217;d understand my own code the next day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You might be sicker than you think<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the problems with excessive use of mind-altering chemicals is that perception gets a little warped&#8230;. that&#8217;s a feature which becomes a bug.\u00a0 Oddly enough, the perception rarely is that this is a bad thing, and is causing real problems.\u00a0 It&#8217;s everything and everyone else.<\/p>\n<p><em>It&#8217;s virtually impossible to self-debug your own mental problems.\u00a0 <\/em>If the computer is broken, it&#8217;s going to be putting out crap results, no matter how good and sensible the input is.\u00a0 So that phrase &#8220;you might be sicker than you think&#8221; is just there to keep the door ajar &#8211; that maybe your perceptions of your conditions are just plain wrong, and sometimes you need to let someone else do your thinking for you, for a while.\u00a0 Then you look back and say holy shit, was I ever sick!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You&#8217;re where you want to be.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was a point in my life where things really and truly sucked.\u00a0 (See above)\u00a0 I was drinking a lot, blaming a lot, and generally depressed and miserable.\u00a0\u00a0 Then the small light went on&#8230; From the age of about 18, nobody was responsible for my actions, decisions, and all that crap but me.\u00a0 If I&#8217;m here in the dumps, I&#8217;ve chosen this path; it&#8217;s nobody&#8217;s fault but mine, and nobody owes me shit.\u00a0 You can choose to change your path anytime.\u00a0 Accept help.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The truth is simple, lies are complicated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to go into the etymology of this one, except to say that in my family, honesty is a commoidity.\u00a0 If something sounds unduly complicated, there&#8217;s probably a lie in there somewhere.\u00a0 Act accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you think you have a problem, you probably do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And if you don&#8217;t know what to do about it, or who to talk to, drop me a line at <a href=\"mailto:sean@maclawran.ca\">sean@maclawran.ca<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 You don&#8217;t know me from a hole in the wall&#8230; so it may actually be easier to mention what&#8217;s up.<\/p>\n<p>And as my old friend Jean B used to say, &#8220;Good luck to you&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">Coding under the influence is fun.
