{"id":109,"date":"2013-07-13T05:22:12","date_gmt":"2013-07-13T05:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.maclawran.ca\/?p=109"},"modified":"2014-05-10T06:17:25","modified_gmt":"2014-05-10T06:17:25","slug":"snowden-is-an-idiot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.maclawran.ca\/?p=109","title":{"rendered":"Snowden blew it."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/8\/81\/MarkFelt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"222\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static2.stuff.co.nz\/1370812792\/627\/8776627.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"222\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t posted for a while but my buddy Danny asked me my opinion on the &#8220;NSA Leaker&#8221;, Edward Snowden.<\/p>\n<p>I had to pause and think a bit.\u00a0 You see, I do the same type of work as Mr Snowden did.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been doing Sys Admin work for years and years; basically, I&#8217;m the god of the machine.\u00a0 I can do all, see all, read all, and delete all.\u00a0 I can read all your mail or files (unless you encrypt them).\u00a0 I can look at all the pictures posted on my machines.\u00a0 And under normal circumstances, I don&#8217;t do any of these things because it&#8217;s not nice.\u00a0 Now, there may be circumstances where I have no choice &#8211; where the action of a user is causing harm to the systems &#8211; then I can go look because I&#8217;m fixing a problem.<\/p>\n<p>So Snowden looked.\u00a0 And found some really interesting stuff.\u00a0 And disclosed it.<\/p>\n<p>So what do I think of Snowden?<\/p>\n<p>Putz.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m old enough to remember <a title=\"Watergate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Watergate_scandal\" target=\"_blank\">Watergate<\/a>.\u00a0 Wanna learn how to leak?\u00a0 Take a lesson from Watergate.\u00a0 The quick version is that an inside source nicknamed <a title=\"Deep Throat\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deep_Throat_%28Watergate%29\">&#8220;Deep Throat&#8221; <\/a>passed along information about the Republican break in (and attempted coverup of)\u00a0 the Democratic Party headquarters to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post who told the world in their book &#8220;All the President&#8217;s Men&#8221;.\u00a0 These leaks happened periodically &#8211; and everyone was glued to their seats &#8211; waiting to see what got disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, President Richard Nixon resigned and\u00a0 <a title=\"White House Chief of Staff\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_House_Chief_of_Staff\">White House Chief of Staff<\/a> <a title=\"H. R. Haldeman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H._R._Haldeman\">H. R. Haldeman<\/a>, <a title=\"G. Gordon Liddy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G._Gordon_Liddy\">G. Gordon Liddy<\/a>, <a title=\"Egil Krogh\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Egil_Krogh\">Egil Krogh<\/a>, <a title=\"White House Counsel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_House_Counsel\">White House Counsels<\/a> <a title=\"Charles Colson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Colson\">Charles Colson<\/a> and <a title=\"John Dean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Dean\">John Dean<\/a>, and presidential adviser <a title=\"John Ehrlichman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Ehrlichman\">John Ehrlichman<\/a> all went to jail.\u00a0 Yes, that&#8217;s right.\u00a0<strong> The President resigned and Bad guys in government went to jail.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And maybe it&#8217;s because <strong>Deep Throat Kept His Mouth Shut.\u00a0 He never talked.\u00a0 Neither did Woodward or Bernstein. 30 years later Vanity Fair outed him.\u00a0 Those are the selfless actions of a patriot; that guy was a hero.\u00a0 It was <a title=\"Mark Felt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Felt\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Felt, Associate Director of the FBI.<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unlike Mr. Snowden&#8230; who managed to keep his mouth shut for 30 minutes&#8230; until <a title=\"NSA Leaker Outs Himself\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/world\/europe\/8776259\/NSA-whistleblower-outs-himself\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;NSA Whistleblower Outs Himself&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At which point all the Bad Things (TM) the government&#8217;s been doing became completely overshadowed by the existence of Mr. Snowden.\u00a0\u00a0 Now it&#8217;s just a big game of &#8220;Where&#8217;s Waldo&#8221;, and &#8220;Where&#8217;s Waldo gonna get asylum?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By disclosing his identity, the entire discussion has changed.\u00a0 Snowden is now the main attraction, and not the abusive actions of the government he revealed.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a pattern here.\u00a0 <a title=\"Wikileaks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WikiLeaks\" target=\"_blank\">Wikileaks<\/a> was wildly effective until <a title=\"Julian Assange\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julian_Assange\" target=\"_blank\">Julian Assange<\/a> revealed his identity &#8211; now it&#8217;s about Julian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You blew it Ed.\u00a0 You know better.\u00a0 You&#8217;re an admin for the NSA.. you know how to be anonymous.\u00a0<\/strong> And reporters still know how to break stories and keep their mouths shut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We&#8217;d have been glued to the real story, and you&#8217;d have been a legend.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Putz.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I haven&#8217;t posted for a while but my buddy Danny asked me my opinion on the &#8220;NSA Leaker&#8221;, Edward Snowden.
